Ministry should look into cancerogenic materials found in Taiwan in eggs imported from Turkey

Beki Başevirgen, Manisa MP of the Republican People's Party (CHP), and a member of the Agriculture, Forest and Village Affairs Commission, issued a statement about the finding of cancerogenic materials in some batches of eggs purchased from Turkey in Taiwan. 

"Chen Chi-chung, the Agriculture Minister of Taiwan, announced that cancer-causing nitrofurans, the use of which is completely banned, have been found in 127.62 tonnes of eggs purchased from Turkey. This is a very serious problem," Başevirgen said. 

The MP asserted that feeding of the chicken with banned medicines or giving them the raw materials of these medicines. 

“Our chicken industry may be badly hurt”

Nitrofurans are listed among the banned materials in the Communique that entered into force on April 29, 2011, reminded Başevirgen. Nobody could purchase eggs confidently before there was an announcement by the Ministry, he added.  

"We now have a suspicion. This severe mistake can cause great harm not only to public health but also to our export of eggs and to the poultry-house owners who do their work properly. 

"Our prestigious chicken industry may be badly hurt.

"Therefore I call on the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to investigate into the event in detail, to start the necessary legal and administrative procedures about those who are responsible, and to fully implement the National Medicine and Residual Follow-Up Plan," Başevirgen said.  

MP Başevirgen is going to submit the Parliamentary Question directed to Minister İbrahim Yumaklı to the Speaker's House.
