Raping a 3-month-old cat in Eyüpsültan, İstanbul, B.Ç. (55) has been sentenced to 3 years in prison on charge of “causing damage to property”. B.Ç. has been released given his period of detention.
Speaking to bianet, lawyer Barış Karlı from Justice to Animals Association said that the decision established a precedent in terms of period of detention, stressed that a special law punishing violence against animals should be enacted.
“The defendant was imposed maximum penalty on charge of ‘damaging cause to property’. But this 3-year penalty means 3-4 months in jail. He was released because he was kept in detention for three months. It seems that he won’t return to jail after the verdict is finalized.
“However, it’s the first time that we saw such a decision in violence against animals. Imposing maximum penalty is a precedent, so is he staying in jail for three months.
“We want the law to be changed as soon as possible and we don’t want to be delighted with these anymore. Proper sanctions should be imposed on people who inflict violence on animals”.
What happened?
Noticing to have lost one of the kittens born from his adopted cat, Rafet Altinkaynak went to the domicile of B.C whom he suspected and caught him raping the kitten. Upon his complaint, B.C was taken into custody then stood trial on charge of “property damage”.

The three-month old kitten exposed to rape was treated in a veterinary but after a short while, lost its life.
