Libya’s Haftar-Allied House of Representatives: Ceasefire is Over

Chair of Libya's Haftar-allied House of Representatives Akile Salih has announced that "the ceasefire is over and the war will continue".

As reported by Anadolu Agency (AA), speaking to a local TV channel in Libya, Chair of Tobruk-based House of Representatives Salih has said that they gave an affirmative response to the joint call for a ceasefire by Turkey and Russia "out of their respect to President of Russia Vladimir Putin."

Salih has indicated that "the ceasefire has ended for them and the war will continue." In reference to their failure to capture Tripoli, he has stated that "Turkey's intervention has delayed their efforts to take Tripoli back."

The call for ceasefire of Turkey and Russia foresaw that the ceasefire would enter into effect on January 12 at 12 a.m. local time in Libya.

Rocket attack

On the other side, the militia affiliated with the Libyan National Army (LNA) leader Khalifa Haftar launched a rocket attack against Salahaddin and Ar-Ramlah regions in the south of Tripoli.

The statement for the press held by Spokesperson of the UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) Muhammed Kununu regarding this attack has been shared by the Burkan Al-Ghadab Operation Press Center.

Referring to the rocket attack, Kununu has stated that pro-Haftar mercenaries are stationed in the region and uncrewed aerial vehicles of United Arab Emirates (UAE) are flying over Tripoli. He has also called on the displaced people to not return to their homes while the conflicts continue.

What happened?

Having occupied two thirds of Libya in the recent period, leader of LNA Khalifa Haftar started to move towards Tripoli.

As the civil war in the country escalated, President and ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and President of Russia Vladimir Putin made a joint call for ceasefire in Libya.

The ceasefire agreement was signed by the GNA following the negotiations held by conflicting parties in Moscow. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia confirmed that LNA leader Khalifa Haftar left the city without signing the agreement yesterday (January 14). (TP/SD)
