Layoff ban, short time work allowance extended for two months

Minister of Family, Labor and Social Services Zehra Zümrüt Selçuk has announced that the short time work allowance and layoff ban have been extended for another two months.

"In order to reduce the effects of the outbreak and protect employment, we are continuing our employees and employers with our Social Protection Shield," she said, adding that the measures were extended upon an order by President and Justice and Development Party (AKP) Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

A related presidential decree has also been published. The decree is based on the first and second paragraphs of Article 10 of the Labor Law No. 4857. 

With a provisional article added to the Labor Law on April 16, employers were banned from terminating labor contracts for three months, as part of the measures to curb the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Employers were also allowed to put employees on unpaid leave for three months.

The layoff ban was first introduced in April and extended twice. (TP/VK)
