Election Body Postpones Verdict on AKP Cancellation Appeal in İstanbul District

The Supreme Election Council (YSK) held a meeting yesterday (April 11) at around 3.45 p.m. to examine the appeal of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) for the cancellation of the local elections in İstanbul's Büyükçekmece district.

The Council decided to postpone its verdict until the recounts in İstanbul districts are completed.

AKP submitted an "extraordinary objection" to the İstanbul Provincial Election Council on April 10 for the cancellation of the election in and a repeat election Büyükçekmece district.

In the March 31 local elections, the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) candidate Hasan Akgün won the election in Büyükçekmece with a 50.34 percent voting share and was mandated by the YSK on April 8.

Parties can make extraordinary objections within seven days after the winning candidate gets the mandate.

The police also conducted an investigation in the district upon the AKP's claims of "moving 11,186 voter registrations to Büyükçekmece before the elections." (HK/VK)
