Diyarbakır Bar President Tahir Elçi killed in the conflict, which has left two police officers dead and three others wounded in Turkey’s southeastern Sur district of Diyarbakır province.
The attack took place after Elçi, along with a group of lawyers made a press statement at around 11 a.m.
State-run Anadolu news Agency correspondent, Aziz Aslan has been injured in the conflict along with three police officers. Aslan has been taken to hosptial.
Anadolu news Agency has claimed that the conflict started by Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fighters opening fire.
The initial statement by Diyarbakır Bar has said Elçi the attack was an “assassination”.
The conflict erupted upon a bearded man fired at the crowd after the press statement, and that Elçi was shot during that conflict, eyewitnesses said.
Cameras were shooting as Elçi was attacked.
President of Bar Association of Turkey, Metin Feyzioğlu, has called for all bar presidents to go to Diyarbakır following the killing.
"This low attack hasn't been launched against Tahir only, but against whole Turkey", said Feyzioğlu.
Feyzioğlu stating though they don't know who is behind the attack, the target is their solidarity and fraternity. (AS/YY/TK)
