Constitutional Court strikes down law denying severance pay to journalists with less than five years of experience

The Constitutional Court has invalidated a provision of the Law on the Regulation of Relations Between Workers Employed in the Press Profession and Those Who Employ Them (Law No. 5953).

The provision in question, brought to the Constitutional Court's attention by the 21st Labor Court of Ankara, stated that journalists with less than five years of experience would not be entitled to severance pay, and any period of employment less than six months within a year would not be considered in the calculation of severance pay.

The 21st Labor Court of Ankara had requested the annulment of the first and seventh paragraphs of Article 6 of the aforementioned law, which contained the provisions mentioned above, claiming that they were unconstitutional.

On May 4, the Constitutional Court examined the application and deemed the provisions in question to be in violation of the Constitution, consequently invalidating them. (AS/VK)
