Almost Half of Syrian Refugees Cannot Go to School

Out of 1 million 47 thousand 536 Syrian refugees who are at the school age, only 651 thousand have access to education, National Education Minister Ziya Selçuk has stated.

Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Niğde MP Ömer Fethi Gürer has submitted a parliamentary question to Minister Selçuk regarding the education problem of the children of the nearly 4 million Syrian refugees.

In his parliamentary question, Gürer has asked:

"In the 2018-2019 school year, what is the number of the Syrian students by provinces and gender? What is the number of the Syrian teachers? What is the number of schools composed of Syrian students?

"Is psychological education provided to students at schools? What is the number of Syrian children who are at the school age but do not go to school? What is the number of the Syrians who dropped out of school?"

500 guidance counselors on duty

National Education Minister Selçuk has said, "In 2018-2019 school year, the number of registered Syrian students is 632,888" in his reply to CHP MP.

"As of October, the number of voluntary educators is 12,663. Syrian students study in 223 temporary education centers in 19 provinces in our country."

Stating that guidance and psychological consultancy services are provided to the Syrian children under temporary protection, Minister Selçuk has said,

"Within the 23 provinces where the project is conducted, 500 guidance counselors provide service. According to September 2018 data of the Directorate General of Migration Management, there are 1 million 47 thousand 536 Syrians at school age (between 5 and 17) in Turkey. Access to school was provided to 651 thousand and 842 of them through Foreign Students Information Operation Center, e-school and open schools." (AÖ/VK)
