MySpace and Last FM Censored
With a decision from June this year the Beyoğlu Public Prosecutor's Office now blocked access to MySpace and Last FM, two of the world's biggest sites for socializing and music-sharing. Both artists and internet users voiced their disapproval of the decision.

Münevver Karabulut - Summary of a Murder Case
Münevver Karabulut's body and dismembered head had been found in a waste container in Etiler, Istanbul, in March this year. Suspect C.Garipoğlu now surrendered to the police 7 months after the murder. The negligent handling of the case was criticized before by Karabulut's family and friends.

Radio journalist Gürbüz was released from detention in her second hearing. Gürbüz had been detained after an operation against the Turkish communist party. Her trial is to be continued.

ECHR: 9 out of 10 Cases in Turkey Unjust
Out of a total of 97,300 cases in the hands of the ECHR 11.4 percent are from Turkey. 1,676 out of 1939 cases from Turkey are concerned with violations of the European Convention. In 50 years only 37 decisions taken by Turkish courts were justified by the ECHR.

Journalist Convicted Because of Anecdote about the President
The court convicted journalist Sevda Turaçlar from the Turkish 'Ekspres' newspaper of insulting president Gül because of publishing an "ignoble" anecdote regarding the president. The sentence of almost 1 year imprisonment is suspended for a period of 5 years. Turçlar declared not to lodge an appeal.

Murder File Returned to its Origin after 18 Years
The Malatya Public Prosecutor's Office decided to close the investigation into the murder case of Vedat Aydın because of "lack of jurisdiction". After 18 years the file has been returned to Diyarbakır now "where the incident started".

ECHR: Turkey Guilty of Disregarding Union's Rights
The ECHR decided in favor of Eğitim-Sen union members Kaya and Seyhan. The union members applied to the ECHR after they had encountered administrative and judicial pressure because of their participation in a one day strike.

Cumhuriyet Newspaper Wiretapped in Ergenekon Investgation!
Cumhuriyet newspaper claimed two journalist were illegally wiretapped related to an operation concerning journalist Mustafa Balbay, who is a detained defendant under charge of "membership of the Ergenekon terror organization". TGC chairman Erinç said that this is a deprivation of the right of freedom of speech for everybody living in Turkey.

Establishing Independent Media Center in Northern Cyprus
NGOs, mostly ignored by the media, and independent journalists from Northern Cyprus establish a common internet portal which will be operational in August 2010. Hugh Pope from ICG and Erhan Üstündağ from bianet participated in a conference about the project in Nicosia last weekend.

Police Defendants Vanished after Relocation
Police officers Tufan and Akbulut, trialed for ill-treatment of village mayor Çiğdem Nalbantoğlu, have been transferred to Şırnak and Diyarbakır. They did not attend any of the court hearings yet although the court instructed them to make their statements.

Prosecutor Calls For Acquittal of Taraf Newspaper Director
The court prosecutor called for the acquittal of Adnan Demir, director of Taraf newspaper. He is accused of violating a publishing ban because of reporting about an attack on the Aktütün Police Station. The case will be continued on 20 October.

After news about the USA selling Patriot missiles to Turkey, the Ministry made an announcement on the matter: "The project was launched in June 2006, the tender process started on 8 April this year", including one company each from China and Russia and two companies from the USA.

Journalist Indicted Without Being Informed
Journalist Baransu is accused of "insulting the military" because of publishing news about the "Anti-Reactionary Plan" against AKP and the religious Fetullah Gülen movement. Now his file has been taken to the Ministry of Justice. The General Staff announced that they opened a trial against Baransu.

According to Journalist Organizations TGC and ÇGD, the heavy fine imposed by the Turkish tax authorities on Doğan Media Group is aimed to silence "criticism of political power" and to bring the group's course "closer to the government".

Journalists Writing About Hrant Dink Murder under Prosecution
Head of the Police Intelligence Department Akyürek filed a complaint against journalist Kemal Göktaş after he has already taken journalist Nedim Şener to court. Both pressmen published books about the Hrant Dink murder, voicing their critical concerns about the handling of the case.

Journalist Önal Assaulted for Taking Pictures of Accident
Journalist Yakup Önal was attacked when he took photos of a bus that had tipped over after an accident in the Tekirdağ district of Şarköy. The journalist is not able to work because of pain as a result from the assault. The prosecutor released the three suspects after he took their statements.

Journalist Vedat Kurşun's Detention Extended to 10 Months
The Diyarbakır court decided not to release journalist Vedat Kurşun from detention. Kurşun is trialed under charges of "campaigning PKK propaganda". His lawyer Özen announced that Kurşun is trialed for his topics being picked up by other national newspapers.

Writer Savran Taken to Court by Ergenekon Defendant Yalçın Küçük
Writer Sungur Savran faces a 10,000 TL compensation demand from writer Yalçın Küçük. Savran has called on Küçük to disprove his claims rather than go to court. The case continues on 24 November.

Baykal Closed the Door to Government's "Opening" Initiative
CHP chair Baykal declined the Prime Minister's request for an appointment, stating: "We are not going to be a part of this process at all". He argued that the government negotiates with the PKK and he refused secret sessions of the parliament. In addition Baykal wants Öcalan's "road map" to be published.

Engineeers Blame Authorities for Disastrous Flood
Flood could have been prevented from turning into a disaster says Istanbul Environmental Egineeers Chamber. The reasons for the disaster are to be sought in licensing buildings erected in the river courses and in the poor sewage and rain water system. Despite meteorologists' warnings no emergency plan was prepared and no warnings were issued.

Torrential Rain in Istanbul Caused Flash Flood in the District of Ikitelli
32 bodies were recovered from the floods, nine people are still missing. Hundreds of cars were dragged along by the massive force of the water. People were trapped in their cars. Buildings collapsed under the impact of the flood.

63 Cases on "Resistance against the Police" for Each Torture Case
According to official numbers compiled by İHD, in relation to 1.7 torture cases in 2008 and 1.4 torture cases in 2007 respectively hundreds of cases concerning "resistance against the police" were filed. İHD chairman Türkdoğan criticizes a lack of effective measures against torture and claims that these figures prove suppression of civil opposition.

Litigation against 13-year-old Child Dropped
The Aydın Juvenile Court dropped the case of a 13-year-old child who was trialed because of addressing Prime Minister Erdoğan with the curse "God damn you". The court announced that the crime of "defaming a public official" cannot be implemented because Erdoğan visited the town in his function as AK Party leader.

Tensed Discussion between Defendant Özkan and President Judge Şengün
The hearing of the Ergenekon case was interrupted because of an ongoing discussion between judge Köksal Şengün and the detained defendant Tuncay Özkan. Defendant Küçük was not allowed to wear his cap in the court room. Because of hearing problems the identity of defendant İbrahim Şahin could not be confirmed.
