EMASYA Protocol Abrogated
The EMASYA protocol, which enabled soldiers to intervene directly in civilian incidents, has been lifted. Interior Minister Atalay forwarded the decision to the governorships, saying: "The existing legislation is sufficient, the law gives the authority to the governors".

Adana: 3,155 Children Arrested in 2009
According to a report of the İHD Adana, 299 children were detained in 2009 in Adana. The children state that they were beaten by police officers, threatened to "confess", restrained by hand-cuffs and chains and exposed to torture by soldiers in prison.

Turkish Cameraman Assaulted at Work
Cameraman Ertuğrul Yılmaz form Kanal 48 was attacked when he took footage of rubble dropped in a forest in Marmaris on the Mediterranean coast. Yılmaz was taken to hospital with a broken nose and broken ribs. A complaint was filed with the attackers.

Turkey on the Streets for Tekel Workers
Tens of thousands of people used their right not to work for one day and supported the struggle of the Tekel workers in a general strike. For Türk-İş President Kumlu it was a successful protest action withstanding the pressure of officials and employers.

Millions of members of six union confederations join the general strike to support Tekel workers in their struggle for job security and take action against the pressure imposed to the workers. Türk-İş President Kumlu repeated the request to protect the workers' employee personal rights.

Call for Release of "Revolutionary Headquarters" Defendant Yeşiltepe
Turkish non-governmental organizations request the release of Mehmet Yeşiltepe from Devrimci Hareket magazine who has been detained for ten months related to the "Revolutionary Headquarters" operation. A series of activities is planned prior to the hearing on 23 February.

Getting Rid of Freedom of Thought...
At least 9 newspapers were banned based on the Anti-Terror Act, 23 people were sentenced to 58 years imprisonment and fines summing up to 9,740 TL; 101 people were convicted of "attacks on personal rights", received prison sentence of 98 years in total and were sued for compensation claims of 1,408,680 TL. Journalist Cihan Hayırsevener was killed due to the state's indifference to violence.

Sentence for Juveniles' "Light Bulb Tayyip" Slogans
Eight trials have been launched against three high school students in Bursa for the slogan "Light bulb Tayyip". The juveniles were convicted in three cases, so far only one court ruled for their acquittal. Young O.K. was found guilty of the same charges in Bursa last year.

ECHR: Religious Indication on IDs Breaches Convention
The European Court of Human Rights convicted Turkey of a breach of freedom of religion. Sinan Işık had applied to change the religious indication on his ID from "Islam" to "Alevi". The court saw the root of the problem in the very existence of the field of indication.

Lawyer Filiz Kalaycı, executive of the Human Rights Association, was released in the second hearing after 8 months in detention. The Human Rights Association claims that evidence was forged by the police. Witness Özkan stated that his statement was taken under pressure.

27 out of 36 journalists who were going to be arrested according to the "Balyoz" Coup Plan filed a criminal complaint. In a press conference, the group of journalists voiced their concerns about the plan and its official handling by the authorities.

Ministry Allows Construction in Natural Park
An environmental platform joined by two municipalities and 23 non-governmental organizations said the Ayvalık Natural Park will be opened to construction due to a revision of the zoning plan. The park hosts endemic plants and wildlife. The platform claims to cancel the new plan.

Draft Law Pending - Children in Prison and on Trial
A court sentenced a 15-year old girl to 8 years imprisonment. Tanrıseven and Aktaş from the Batman and Diyarbakır Bar Association respectively urged the goverment to pass necessary legal amendments as soon as possible. However, these changes will still be insufficient to protect the children.

17 defendants stand trial regarding a weapons cache found in Poyrazköy. The Istanbul 12th High Criminal Court accepted the indictment despite the Constitutional Court's recent cancellation of the law regarding military staff being tried at a civil court.

Censorship Costs Turkey 43,000 Euro at ECHR
The European Court of Human Rights sentenced Turkey to a € 36,000 compensation fine for closing five newspapers because of their focus on the Kurdish question. Aziz Özer, who had been silenced for describing prison operations as "barbaric attacks" receives € 3,423 in compensation.
