The pro-Kurdish DEM Party has won Elazığ’s Karakoçan district by just over 200 votes. The ruling party’s candidate got nearly half of the vote in the previous election.

"Today, everyone who cast their vote for the AK Party and the People's Alliance, as well as all those who strengthened the power of the ballot by exercising their democratic rights, have emerged victorious," the president remarked.

"Our nation has not only decided who will be the local administrators, but has also given an important decision and message on how our country and municipalities should be governed, and how they should not be governed," said Özel.

The officers used tear gas to disperse the crowd and detained several people.

"According to the data, we can say that our citizens have shown the reflection of their trust in us," said the incumbent mayor.

Mass voting by security officers who were relocated fro other provinces is reported throughout the country's predominantly Kurdish-populated regions.
