According to the BİA Media Monitoring Report of the July-August period, 126 media representatives faced trials. In the last three months, at least five media representatives, including three women and one LGBTI+, were detained. The most important agenda of the three months was the "Disinformation Law."

Internet news portals and journalists working for them are now subject to the Press Law. "Spreading disinformation" is now an offense with a prison sentence of up to three years.

Akarsel was shot dead in Iraqi Kurdistan. Her body was brought to Türkiye by land as the authorities reportedly did not allow air transport. Police blocked the entry of many people to her village to attend the funeral.

The journalist wasn't at home at the time of the raid. The police found out that she was a journalist only after forcibly entering her apartment.
