“The moment when President Erdoğan says, ‘Let’s have a snap election’, the MHP and AKP will come together and decide for a snap election at the Parliament”, main opposition CHP Chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has said in a TV program today.

The elected mayors of HDP's 20 municipalities have been replaced with state-appointed trustees since the local elections on March 31, 2019. Governors or district governors have been appointed as acting mayors in their place.

HDP’s Savur District Co-Mayor Gülistan Öncü, Mazıdağı District Co-Mayor Nalan Özaydın, Derik District Co-Mayor Mülkiye Esmez and Suruç District Co-Mayor Hatice Çevik have been detained on the ground of ongoing investigations against them.

According to a survey conducted in the provinces of Diyarbakır, Van and Mardin, whose elected Metropolitan Mayors have been removed from office, 62.5 percent of the people find the HDP’s reaction against appointment of trustees insufficient.

Stating that the 36 members were detained six days for "chanting anti-war slogans," the HDP has said they have been tortured by the police.
