After the Interior Ministry replaced three mayors with trustees in southeastern cities, an opposition MP claimed the government "laid the groundwork" for the dismissal of the mayors of İstanbul and Ankara.

28 bar associations have released a joint statement and announced the removal of elected Metropolitan Mayors of Diyarbakır, Mardin and Van from office. “Turkey has once again woken up to a lawless morning”, the bars have stated.

The Progressive Lawyers Association (ÇHD), the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB), the Lawyers for Democracy, the Human Rights Association (İHD) and the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TİHV) have released statements on the dismissal of mayors.

People have protested the appointment of trustees to three HDP Metropolitan Municipalities, the police have intervened against the protests in Diyarbakır and Van. “The will of the people cannot be seized”, the HDP İstanbul has stated.

The two former prominent figures of the AKP criticized to the dismissal of three mayors, saying it is "against democracy."

After trustees have been appointed to HDP’s Metropolitan Municipalities of Diyarbakır, Mardin and Van, the party has held an emergency meeting. HDP Co-Chair Temelli has said, “August 19 is a new civilian coup, it is a continuation of September 12 mechanics.”

Commenting on the decision on the dismissal of three metropolitan mayors, Diyarbakır Bar Association Chair Aydın has said, "Their legal status is the same as before the election. That hasn't changed. This is a coup against the judiciary."

After the Ministry of Interior has appointed trustees to Metropolitan Municipalities of Diyarbakır, Van and Mardin, the official websites of the municipalities have been closed.

After the HDP’s Metropolitan Mayors of Diyarbakır, Mardin and Van have been removed from office and governors have been appointed in their place, the party has released a statement and said, “Do not remain silent -to remain silent is to give approval.”

İmamoğlu has criticized the dismissal of the mayors of Diyarbakır, Van and Mardin.

Several social media users, including politicians from the HDP, CHP and SP have denounced the appointment of trustees to HDP’s Metropolitan Municipalities of Van, Diyarbakır and Mardin, who have been removed from office earlier in the day.

After several bar associations, the Diyarbakır Bar Association has also rejected the invitation for the opening ceremony of the new judicial year at the presidency in Beştepe.
