The suspension of the teachers came after a tweet by the former mayor of Ankara. İstanbul LGBTI+ Pride Week Committee has expressed support for the affected teachers.

"We are struggling, all of us, for a world in which our lives can neither be bargained away nor simply annihilated. But if you speak this way, speaking brings you into peril. If you gather, as is your right, you are accused of domestic terrorism," said the philosopher.

The "Tea&Talk" events have been attended by English speakers in İstanbul for years.

"We will continue to wield our pen in support of the hard-fought rights of LGBTI+s," the staff said in a video message.

The organizers of the picnic have condemned arbitrary bans on Pride Month events.

"We no longer want to report on violence and bans against LGBTI+s!" 154 journalists said in a joint statement.
