Millions of People Stop Work for Tekel Workers
Millions of members of six union confederations join the general strike to support Tekel workers in their struggle for job security and take action against the pressure imposed to the workers. Türk-İş President Kumlu repeated the request to protect the workers' employee personal rights.

"General Action" of Tekel Workers on 4 February
The six trade union confederations representing the interests of the Tekel workers in Ankara decided to go for a "general action" on 4 February. The decision was taken after the government did not step back from temporary employment of the workers.

Minister Yazıcı Holds on to Disadvantageous 4C Regulation
Prime Minister Erdoğan assigned a group of ministers to study all possibilities within the 4C regulations for all workers. As far as the resisting Tekel workers are concerned, Minister Yazıcı does not see any alternative but the disadvantageous 4C regulation.

Worker Yaşar from the Tek Gıda-İş union: "The workers expect the confederations to put a general strike on the agenda. There is no area left that was not attacked by the government. The hunger strike was our last resort. If I died today, my children would benefit from a higher pension".

Thousands of Tekel workers called for a general strike in Ankara after another protest march on Suday. The workers occupied the Türk-İş building after the unions federation executives had not made the expected announcement regarding a full scale strike.

TEKEL Workers Determined to Continue Action
TEKEL workers decided to carry on with their protest actions for the protection of personal employers rights started 25 days ago. The ballot was decided in favour of the resistance by the vast majority of workers. The struggle for the workers' rights will be extended both in time and dimension.

According to the Turkish Confederation of Labour Unions, 2009 was once more characterized by labour rights violations, extortion of rights and police interventions against workers seeking their rights. The confederation announced continuous and extended protest actions for 2010.

Resistance of TEKEL Workers Supported by Union Confederations
In order to support the resistance of TEKEL workers, unions affiliated with Türk-İş, DİSK and KESK interrupted work for 1 hour on Friday, 25 December. The 3 union confederations pronounced to repeat their action every Friday as a warning to the government.

16 Railway Workers Returned to Work by TCDD
16 of the 46 workers that were suspended by the Railway Authorities in the course of recent protest actions have been returned to work. The workers demanded their right to strike and to collective agreements. KESK president Evren signalized a "general strike" if not all workers will be returned to work.

In the case related to the death of 8 employees who drowned in a company van during the flood in Istanbul, the court acquitted Pameks Textile company owner Cevdet Karahansoğlu and administrative supervisor Seyit Göncük.

State Railway Authority Suspended 46 Workers after Strike
Another 30 railway workers were suspended form work because they continued their strike as a reaction to the suspension of 16 workers the day before. The State Railway Authority will claim compensation and is also going to file a criminal complaint. The unions are determined in their struggle for rights.

Company Owner Disappears after Mine Explosion
After the death of 19 workers in a coal mine explosion in Bursa the company's general manager, business manager and the quarry supervisor have been arrested. A preliminary report suggests insufficiency of the mine's aeration and gas measurement. Company owner Ercan did not comment.

Public Servants on Strike for the Right to Strike
The strike of public workers was supported by trade associations, workers' unions and left-wing organizations. In Istanbul, KESK president Evren criticised the government for avoiding the formation of a collective labour agreement board. In Ankara, the police employed force against the striking workers.

Perilous Working Conditions in Turkey's Shipyards
Worker Mahmut Altınöz became the 15th casualty in a Turkish shipyard this year. Altınöz lost his life as a result of a work accident. Union chairman Dinç cirticized, "The government is to be held responsible for the fact that employers do not give any importance to the safety of their employees' lives".
