Refugees Attacked by Greece Apply to ECtHR

Edirne Director of Health Ali Cengiz Kalkan has announced that four refugees injured by the security forces of Greece on Turkey-Greece border have applied to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

Indicating that the Union of Turkish Bar Associations (TBB), İstanbul Bar Association and Edirne Bar Association are following the issues regarding the rights violations on the border, Kalkan has noted that 25 other injured refugees are also preparing to apply to the European supreme court.

Since Turkey announced that it would no longer stop refugees trying to leave the country for Europe following an attack on its military forces in Syria's Idlib, refugees have been heading for Turkey-Greece border.

Accordingly, hundreds of refugees have been waiting at the border for 18 days now. The border forces of Greece have been occasionally intervening against them with gas bombs, pressurized water and bullets.

As reported by state-run Anadolu Agency (AA), Edirne Provincial Health Director Kalkan has also shared information about the ongoing sanitation and hygiene works in the area. Kalkan has indicated that Turkey has provided 7,024 refugees with health services so far.

He added that three refugees were killed and 213 were injured during Greece's interventions while 13 of them are still under treatment in hospitals.

Noting that the gas bombs fired from the other side of the border sometimes hit the medical tents set up by Turkey in the field, Health Director Kalkan has indicated that health personnel are trying to treat the refugees under difficult conditions by wearing gas masks. 

"We are also providing primary healthcare in the field. Within this context, we have vaccinated 1,581 children and 44 pregnant women", Kalkan has added. (AS/SD)
