Police Violence During March 8 Events on Parliamentary Agenda

The main opposition party Republican People's Party (CHP) Istanbul MP Gamze Akkuş-İlgezdi has submitted a parliamentary inquiry to be responded by the Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım and directed questions regarding the police violence inflicted upon the women who gathered in front of Çankaya Municipality in Ankara on Sunday (March 4) for the March 8 demonstration.
Referring to the dimensions of the violence committed by men against women, Akkuş-İlgezdi has drawn attention to the fact that around the same moment when the Prime Minister Yıldırım said, "We condemn violence against women. Shall those hands that reach for women be broken" at the AKP Women's Branch Congress in Muğla, the police inflicted violence against women because of March 8 demonstrations.
Akkuş-İlgezdi has made the following statements:
"Police Violence Against Women is Unacceptable"
"In our country, where violence against women has been escalating with each passing day, the police forces made a harsh intervention and detained the women who took to the streets in several cities for the upcoming March 8 International Working Women's Day celebrations.
"It is unacceptable that in a period when women's labor is exploited, the violence against women has been escalating, a woman is murdered almost each day and children are sexually abused, women who take to the streets are attacked and detained by the police forces." (EK/SD)
