Police intervention against commemoration of Gezmiş, Aslan and İnan

It has been 49 years since Deniz Gezmiş, Yusuf Aslan and Hüseyin İnan, the leading figures of the 68 Generation, were executed. Police officers have intervened against the commemoration in the capital city of Ankara.

Executed in Ankara on May 6, 1972, Deniz Gezmiş, Yusuf Aslan and Hüseyin İnan, the leading figures of the 68 Generation, were commemorated on the 49th anniversary of their death today.

The police intervened against the commemoration ceremony held by the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP). As reported by KRT TV, the commemoration organized by the CHP's Çankaya District Municipality was held at the Karşıyaka Cemetery.

The police did not allow the group to march to the cemetery, citing the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as the reason.

As reported by Gerçek Gündem news website, the police did not allow the banner of "We exist with you" to be taken to the cemetery. The banner was furled and the CHP politicians and members entered the cemetery for the commemoration. They laid a wreath on the graves of Deniz Gezmiş, Yusuf Aslan and Hüseyin İnan and kept a moment of silence.

Following the military coup on March 12, 1971, Deniz Gezmiş and Yusuf Aslan were caught in Şarkışla district of Sivas province and Hüseyin İnan in Kayseri province. Sentenced to death on November 9, 1971, they were executed ın May 6, 1972 in Ankara Central Closed Prison.

In a statement released by the Central Executive Committee of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), it is noted that "the struggle and memory of the three has been eternalized in the hearts of millions of people."

CHP Chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has also commemorated Deniz Gezmiş, Hüseyin İnan and Yusuf Aslan on social media: "I remember the patriotic children of this country Hüseyin İnan, Deniz Gezmiş and Yusuf Aslan, who shouted 'Long Live Fully Independent Turkey' in the last step that they took with courage, with respect and longing."

Message by İstanbul Mayor

İstanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has also shared a brief message on his Twitter account, briefly saying, "Hail to the young people who struggled for fully independent Turkey, who had a free mind and conscience. On the anniversary of their execution, I remember Deniz Gezmiş, Yusuf Aslan and Hüseyin İnan with mercy."
