PEN Turkey Tells The Government To Recognize The Rights Of The Homosexuals

Tarık Günersel, Presiden of PEN Turkey, announced that the homosexuals in Turkey were oppressed. Reminding the UN declaration signed by the 64 countries which ends making homosexualism a crime, he asks the government not to ignore it.

Tarık Günersel, President of PEN Turkey, called upon the government and the public to take action to respect the rights of the homosexuals.

Reminding that 64 countries signed the decision to end making homosexualism a crime at the sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Günersel said, “The rights of the homosexuals are a part of the human rights that cannot be ignored.”

Sayin “The Turkish government must realize, accept and confirm this fact”, the President of the PEN Turkey said, “It is much better to be the 65th than the 165th.”

64 countries signed it

On December 18, 2008, the United Nations published a declaration signed by 64 countries that ended making homosexualism a crime in the countries that are members in the UN.

The declaration, which was prepared by the initiative of France and Holland, states that the human rights are for all the people and therefore the homosexuals should not be accused of their sexual preference. (BÇ/TB)
