“Instead of Dealing Violence Against Women, UN Must...”

“Instead of dealing violence against women, UN must stop human killings,” said Turkey’s Directory of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) President Mehmet Görmez. 

Görmez pronounced these works while addressing a speech after the “Collaboration Protocols For the Contribution of Religion Workers to Prevent Violence Against Women and Protection of Family” at the headquarters of Turkey’s Diyanet Institution, Ankara. 

Görmez’s remarks have been posted on the official twitter account of Directory of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) as well. 

Claiming that discrimination against women is a sort of racism, Görmez said the following: 

“I took a decision with my free will yesterday. We are supporting this project since 2010. But after this point, I won’t spend a dime of UN’s money on this. I don’t accept that money.  Let them use that money to prevent crimes against humanity and other types of homicides.  We have our imams, we have our morals, we have our resources to tell our people about violence against women and compassion against people. 

“All women rights supporters, their activists and associations have entered into a huge legitimacy crisis. Because in a world where 17 year-old girl Esma is subjected to sniper bullets, if nobody including women, westerners or easterners don’t move a finger, there is no point on defending women’s rights in conference rooms.” 

The protocol ceremony has also been attended by Deputy PM Bekir Bozdağ and Family and Social Policies Minister Fatma Şahin. (ÇT/BM)
