Independent MP Cihangir İslam joins main opposition CHP

Independent MP Cihangir İslam has become a member of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP).

At the Parliamentary group meeting of the CHP today (March 9), CHP Chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu pinned the party badge on İslam's collar.

In the last general elections in 2018, İslam entered the elections from the CHP. After being elected as an MP from the main opposition party in İstanbul, he resigned from the party and joined the Felicity Party (SP).

Regarding his resignation from the SP in March 2020, Cihangir İslam briefly said the following: "The differences of method and opinion as well as my belief in the prevalence of a pure, liberal, democratic, pluralist and egalitarian understanding embracing all segments of the society have constituted the reasons for my resignation in general."

With Cihangir İslam joining the CHP, the number of seats of the main opposition party at the Parliament has increased to 136.

About Cihangir İslam

A Specialist of Orthopedics and Traumatology and Professor.

Having graduated from the Medical School of Ankara University in 1983, he also studied at the Philosophy Department of Anadolu University Open Education Faculty (AÖF) and Süleymaniye Foundation Distance Seminar Center (SUSEM) Islamic Studies Program.

He received training and completed fellowship programs on Spinal Surgery and Clinical Research at the US Minnesota University, Canada - Montreal McGill University and US Minnesota Twin Cities Spine Center. He is a student of Philosophy at Mimar Sinan University. He was a faculty member at the Departments of Orthopedics and Traumatology of Yüzüncü Yıl University and Kafkas University and the Head of Haydarpaşa Numune Training and Research Hospital's Orthopedics and Traumatology Clinic.

He is among the founders of Mazlumder, Felicity Party (SP), Pure (Has) Party, Justice Ground and Right and Justice Platform. He was the co-moderator of Artı TV's 45+45 program and a columnist for Duvar newspaper. He has over 100 scientific publications and social works.
