CHP Report: Half of Women in Turkey Don't Have a Bank Account

Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Vice-Chair Lale Karabıyık has presented a report on women at the party's central executive committee.

The report is based on the figures of the World Economic Forum Gender Gap Index, the daily Cumhuriyet reported.

Here are highlights from the report:

• In Turkey, 42 percent of women are exposed to gender-based violence throughout the lifetime, the highest rate in the OECD countries.
• The average age of marriage for women in Turkey is 24.2, while 41.4 percent of women get married before the age of 25. The country whose women have the closest rate of marriage before the age of 25 is the Netherlands, with 27.2 percent.
• In Turkey, women's literacy rate is below the OECD average. Accordingly, the literacy rate is 93.8 percent, lower than any EU country except Portugal.
• The primary school completion rate of women between 25-54 years of age is 86.8 percent in Turkey. 40.1 percent of those women completed high school and 10.6 percent graduated from university.
• The rate of women to have a bank account in Turkey is estimated at 44.3 percent, the lowest rate among OECD, G20 and EU countries. Even in Saudi Arabia, 61.1 percent of women have a bank account.
• In Turkey, women's labor force participation rate of 36.1 percent, lower than any other OECD and EU country and higher than only Saudi Arabia among G20 countries. (EMK/VK)
