Attorney İlkiz: A Basic Law Required to Protect Personal Data

Attorney Fikret İlkiz has stated that a basic legislation to protect personal data should be enacted prior to draft law to include biometric data in IDs and save it in family registries.

Articles related to including biometric data in IDs took place in bag bill proposal the Justice and Development Party (AKP) referred to the parliament on December 22.

According to the proposal, all citizens’ IDs will have chips that include their unique marks such as fingerprints, vein prints and palm prints.

Interior Ministry will determine which biometric data will be included in IDs.

Biometric data will also be added to the family registries.

“There must be a basic law”

İlkiz underlined the importance of a basic law in this matter.

“There must be a basic law, and that law should be about protecting personal data.

“However, after that basic law is accepted, a change could be made for instance in law on population registration. If it is enacted without such a basic law, then many conflicts will arise.

“Firstly, the proposal regarding protection of personal data should be sent to parliament and enacted.

“After it is legislated, changes should be made in other laws in line with provisions of this law”. (YY/TK)
