Arrest Warrant for Cem Aygün's Shooter Policeman

An Ankara court issued an arrest warrant for Fatih Yılmaz,  the police officer who caused the death of Cem Aygün (24) for not obeying the "halt" warning.

“In the case hearing today [April 8], the prosecutor presented their opinion and wanted that suspect police officer Fatih Yılmaz be arrested. The court issued the warrant on this scope,” Ertuğrul Cem Cihan, Aygün family attorney, told bianet.

While the next hearing was set to May 22, Cihan continued as follows:

"This is positive progress. Prosecutor didn’t say ‘premeditated murder’ in his opinion but said ‘premeditated injury leading to death’

“In the previous hearing, our claim was that the purpose is murder and in case the court didn’t accept it, the worst chance is ‘premeditated injury leading to death’. It is good for us that prosecutor had an opinion in such a way.

“The prosecutor stated: ‘Cem Aygün only ran away, he was unarmed and posed no threat. Therefore, there is no condition that required the use of firearms by any police officers according to the Code of Police Officers (PSVK).”

“The suspect police officer was charged according to Turkish Penal Code (TCK) Article 87. Should the court accept prosecutor’s opinion, the police officer is expected to serve at least eight years of sentence.”
