7th Hearing in Cumhuriyet Trial

Seventh hearing of Cumhuriyet trial in which 20 defendants two of whom are pending trial in detention have been tried will be held at Silivri Compound today (March 16).
Cumhuriyet Newspaper Executive Board Chair lawyer Akın Atalay has been jailed pending trial for 503 days. Prosecutor Hacı Hasan Bölübaşı is expected give an opinion in today’s hearing.
The trial was moved to Silivri before
Seeing that the first hearing of the trial on July 24 was attended by a large number of people, the court board previously decided to move the second hearing of the trial on September 11 to Silivri. However, they later reversed their decision and moved the trial back to İstanbul Çağlayan Courthouse.
The second hearing of the trial held at Silivri Campus was also attended by many lawyers, politicians, journalists, participants and representatives from rights organizations.
For the sixth hearing of the trial today as well, a large number of representatives from rights organizations, lawyers and journalists have come to Silivri to watch the hearing.
Şık and Sabuncu have been freed
Two of the defendants Cumhuriyet Editor-in-Chief Murat Sabuncu and its reporter Ahmet Şık were released in the hearing dated March 9.
İstanbul 27th Heavy Penal Court chief judge Abdurrahman Orkun Dağ, who released Ahmet Şık and Murat Sabuncu, said “Captains desert last the sinking ship. You are with us Mr. Akın” and ruled continuation of arrest of Atalay.
What happened?On October 31, 2016, İstanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office began investigating Cumhuriyet Foundation executives on charges of "Making publications that justify July 15 coup attempt" and "committing crime for PKK/KCK (Kurdistan Workers' Party/Kurdistan Communities Union) and FETÖ/PDY (Fethullahist Terrorist Organization/Parallel State Organization) as non members". The investigation was initially launched by prosecutor Murat İnam who was at the same time a suspect in the trial of "FETÖ (Fethullahist Terrorist Organization)". Five hearings have been held in the trial so far.
