3 out of 4 Teachers Point out Violence at School

The Education and Science Workers' Union (Eğitim-Sen) published its "2010-2011 Status Report on Education in the Beginning of the Academic Year". The report revealed the widespread use of violence against students.

The education union issues this report on an annual basis at the beginning of each academic year.

The report is based on field research and surveys made with 500 members of the teaching personnel. The questions of the survey aimed at the problems that are experienced at school.

The survey offered a multiple choice answer key with six options ranging from "This problem does not occur at all" to "This is a very serious problem". Respondents were allowed to give more than one answer.

76.5 percent see violence as a problem

Answers to the question "How big is the problem of beating students and violence against students at your school?" were distributed as follows: "This problem does not occur at all": 51.39 percent; "this is a minor problem": 20.76 percent; "his is a problem": 17.97 percent, "this is a major problem": 5.57 percent; "this is a very serious problem": 4.3 percent.

Adding up the answers ranging from "minor problem" to "very serious", a total of 76.45 percent see violence as a problem at school.

Insult a common problem at all schools

Answers to the question how to evaluate the problem of insult and humiliation of students at school were given as follows: "This problem does not occur at all": 36.09 percent; "this is a minor problem": 21.3 percent; "his is a problem": 22.56 percent, "this is a major problem": 12.53 percent; "this is a very serious problem": 7.52 percent.

More than a third of all respondents said that this is not a problem. Yet, taking into account the possibility to give more than one answer on the other hand, the survey revealed that 100 percent of the interviewees assessed insult and humiliation against the students as a problem at Turkish schools.
