Since 2019, the opposition-led İstanbul Municipality has been offering 0.5 cubic meters of water free of charge per 2.5 cubic meters of water consumed in households. The Ministry of Treasury has dismissed the claims that a ‘tax’ is to be levied on this amount.

Launching a similar campaign itself, Siirt Municipality has requested damages from dismissed co-mayors Işık and Turhan and 23 municipal council members who were investigated for "writing off the default interest of outstanding water bills."

Bolu Mayor Özcan has said, "You cut the aid. You say, 'I am not giving you workplace license.' But they are still not leaving. We have decided to take new measures."
