In the trial over the killing of Uğur Kantar by torture during his mandatory military service, a heavy penal court in Ankara has sentenced defendant Fırat Keser to aggravated life imprisonment for “causing death as a result of torture.”

Diyarbakır 11th Criminal Court of First Instance gave ruling that the offence was “qualified torture” and decided of non-jurisdiction in case of Uğur Kantar.

The trial regarding the death of soldier Uğur Kantar who allegedly died as the result of torture started on 18 November. The court is going to evaluate the motion for lack of jurisdiction. The decision will be announce at the next hearing on 16 December.

Five soldiers and one prison director are indicted in the Uğur Kantar death by torture trial. Contrary to the statement of the General Staff, the indictment claims that Kantar died as the result of torture.
