With restoration works completed, Sümela Monastery in Turkey’s Black Sea province of Trabzon has started receiving its visitors.

"If we were a nation targeting other symbols of other beliefs, the Sümela Monastery, which we have had for five centuries, would have gone forever now," the President has said.

Opening for visitors after three-year restoration work, the Sümela Monastery was visited by 50 thousand tourists in June. Officials say their target is 500 thousand for this year.

Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew advocated for a peaceful coexistence, saying, "We have no ulterior motives. We came to commemorate the Greek Orthodox people living in this area". The service was attended by hundreds of Greek Orthodox Christians from Turkey and abroad.
