The Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV) levied on alcoholic beverages and tobacco products has been increased by 47.4 percent. That being the case, the amount of tax to be paid for a pack of cigarettes has been increased from 9.76 to 14.39 lira.

The expected reductions in the fuel oil prices due to the falls in foreign exchange rates will not affect the money paid by citizens to buy fuel oil as this amount will be levied on them as the special consumption tax.

With a Presidential decree published in the Official Gazette today, the special consumption tax on electric vehicles has been increased to up to 60 percent, while several European countries have been giving incentives to encourage their use.

Some 12 percent of the government's tax income came from alcoholic drinks and tobacco products last year.
