Three out of every four people say that the price increases in tobacco products do not lead to lower consumption of cigarettes in Turkey.

In line with the circular of the Interior Ministry, the Governor’s Office of İstanbul has banned smoking in streets and avenues closed to traffic and at the bus stops. Police officers have fined the citizens for smoking in public.

While the Ministry of Interior has expanded countrywide smoking restriction to crowded streets and stops, the citizens aged 65 and older have been restricted from going out at certain hours of the day in İzmir as part of COVID-19 measures.

Stating that the best places in cafes and restaurants are allocated to smoking guests, Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca has said that these smoking areas will be moved to closed spaces, which will not exceed 30 percent of the whole place.

Turkey is considering introducing a ban on smoking, an idea which is provoking very mixed reactions.
