New Prosecutor Demands 15-Year Sentence for Students
The new prosecutor in the trial against students Tüzer, Yılmaz and Aykar demanded imprisonment of 15 years each on charges of "membership of an illegal organization". The previous prosecutor had plead for the students' acquittal in the scope of "freedom of expression".

Politician Dicle Facing 10 Years in Jail
Politician Hatip Dicle is facing imprisonment of up to ten years because of the contents of his book and a speech he made at the Democratic Society Congress. Detained Dicle was elected as Deputy of Diyarbakır in June but deprived from his right to deputyship.

Aysel Tuğluk Still Facing Dozens of Years in Prison
Trials against Kurdish politicians Aysel Tuğluk and Ahmet Türk, Co-Chairs of the Democratic Society Congress, are still pending in Ankara and Diyarbakır. Tuğluk is facing 70 years behind bars in the Diyarbakır trial and another five years from the Ankara procedures.

Nine Children Face 24 Years in Jail
A trial was opened against nine juveniles who are alleged of having thrown stones and explosives at the police in the course of a demonstration in Adana. The young defendants are facing 24 years in prison in total.

Journalist Saymaz' s Toll: 107-year Prison Threat
Journalist Saymaz is yet facing two more trials on the grounds of his book "The postmodern Jihad" and a news item on the Courthouse in Sultanbeyli. He is charged with "identifying officials on anti-terror duties as a target" and "defamation, insult, and influencing the judiciary" respectively.

Two-Year Prison Threat for Egg Throwing
State Minister Bağış sued a student for throwing an egg at him. The 21-year-old student is facing imprisonment of up to 2 years. The first hearing is scheduled fo 10 February.

The prosecution demanded imprisonment of 20 years for Gurbet Çakar, editorial manager of the Kurdish-Turkish Renge Heviya Jine women magazine. She is charged with spreading propaganda for the PKK and "committing a crime on behalf of the organization".

Prison Threats Endanger Investigative Journalism in Turkey
Mijatovic from the OSCE appreciated Minister Davutoğlu's initiative for legal amendments to avoid trials on freedom of expression at the European Court of Human Rights and offered her assistance. She said that critical reporting is hindered by prion threats in Turkey.
