ECHR: Şık and Şener’s Rights Were Violated
The European Court of Human Rights held that Turkey violated the right to “liberty and security” as well as “freedom of expression” in OdaTV case where prominent journalist Ahmet Şık and Nedim Şener were jailed for 375 days.

Four defendants of the Oda TV case were released pending trial: Journalists Nedim Şener and Ahmet Şık and Odat TV writers Çoşkun Musluk and Sail Çakır. Şık and Şener presented their defence at the 12 March hearing.

An indictment was prepared about journalists Şık and Şener who are detained in the scope of the Ergenekon investigation since March. They are charged with "aiding an armed illegal organization". The Indictment includes a total of 14 defendants.

The appeals against the detentions of journalists Ahmet Şık and Nedim Şener were rejected by court. Both were arrested on 6 March in the scope of the Ergenekon investigation. The decision does not mention a concrete reason. Turkey is facing national and international criticism.

Journalists Ahmet Şık and Nedim Şener Arrested
Journalists Ahmet Şık and Nedim Şener were arrested by an Istanbul court on duty on Sunday because of their alleged affiliation to the Ergenekon terrorist organization. Journalists protested the arrests in front of the courthouse and blocked the road with a sit-down strike.

The International Press Institute rewarded Turkish journalist Nedim Şener as one of 60 World Press Freedom Heroes in a ceremony in Vienna on 14 September. The IPI Steering Board condemned Turkey for detaining and prosecuting dozens of journalists.

Journalist Nedim Şener was acquitted in the case on his book "The Dink murder and the intelligence lies". Şener had been facing imprisonment of up to three years. The International Press Institute chose Şener as one of the international "press heroes".
