According to BİA Media Monitoring Report, 29 journalists were physically attacked, 11 were detained in the 3rd quarter of 2021. While the attacks on journalists soared from 11 to 29 in a year, they went beyond borders with Erk Acarer stabbed in Berlin.

Journalists and Media Gripped By Government-Police
48 journalists were assaulted and 11 detained in Turkey’s Gezi Resistance. As of October 2013, 66 journalists and 27 publishers remained behind bars. 28 journalists, authors and media representatives were convicted to a total of one life sentence, 329 years and 2 months of prison.

#Resist Press Freedom!
During the Gezi Resistance, 105 journalists have been assaulted, 28 detained and 2 sent to prison. Between April and June, 66 journalists and 27 publishers were behind bars in Turkey. 13 individuals (including 5 journalists) have been convicted of Anti-Terror Act-related sentence with a total of 67 years, 2 months and 7 days of prison as well as 6,600 euros fine.

According to the 2010 January-February-March Media Monitoring Report, published by the BİA Media Monitoring Desk, a total of 216 people were on trial in the context of freedom of thought and expression during the first three months of the year, among them 69 journalists.

Publication bans based on the Anti-Terror Act were imposed to at least 9 newspapers in 2009. 23 people were tried under the same law, 101 people were convicted of “attacks on personal rights”. Journalist Cihan Hayırsevener was killed due to the state’s indifference to violence.
