Seventeen people, including a brigadier general, were killed and many homes and businesses were set on fire in the Kurdish-majority province of Diyarbakır in 1993.

Another application has been made for the deferment of the execution of the prison sentence of 83-year-old Mehmet Emin Özkan, whose court records show that he has been in prison for 25 years for a crime he did not commit.

The only defendant in the case of the massacre which took place 25 years ago in the district of Lice in Diyarbakır, the then Gendarmerie Regimental Commander Eşref Hatipoğlu has been acquitted.

Hearing of Lice trial has been held for the first time without the presence of the murdered Diyarbakır Bar President Tahir Elçi. Teacher Cantekin who had witnessed the massacre testified in the hearing today (December 25) and told what the soldiers have been doing.

It has come out that retired Colonel Hatipoğlu didn’t attend the hearing of Lice trial heard in İzmir and gave his testimony alone, thereupon victim attorneys claimed for recusation.
