Kurdish poet İlhan Sami Çomak, 51, was freed last week after serving 30 years in prison.

“I had imagined being freed on a brighter and sunnier day, seeing the light in my loved ones’ eyes in a different atmosphere. But this is good too—I’m free at last," Çomak said upon his release.

The Kurdish poet has been incarcerated for almost three decades and was denied release, even though he was eligible for conditional release in August.

Imprisoned for 28 years, İlhan Sami Çomak has been awarded the poetry prize for his book “Hayattayız Nihayet” (We are finally alive).

Two videos about jailed poet İlhan Çomak will be screened in the “Fragmented Identities” section of the Borders Festival in Venice. Jailed for 26 years, Çomak was appointed as an Honorary Member of PEN Norway earlier this year.

Upon the recommendation of the Writers in Prison Committee, PEN Norway has appointed İlhan Sami Çomak and Ilham Tohti as its new honorary members.
