Gold mining, deemed not in the public interest during the Bergama resistance, has been legitimized since the late 1990s and identified with national interests. The environmental damage and risks it causes have been ignored, and legal protections have been lifted.

An Environmental Impact Assessment report has been prepared to extend the 14-hectare granite quarry to 110 hectares. The report covering an area in Bergama and Ayvalık in the north Aegean foresees the cutting of nearly 9 thousand stone pines.

The struggle of Bergama against gold mine has been continuing since 1997. Rights defenders and attorneys who conducted a reconnaissance yesterday have filed another lawsuit for cancellation of the positive Environmental Impact Assessment report.

Turkey’s Cumalıkızık and Bergama sites entered UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Turkey has 13 places on the list now.
