Cumhuriyet newspaper columnist Bekir Coşkun has been ordered to pay roughly 2,000 euros as non-pecuniary damages to PM Erdoğan for defamation due to his article entitled “The Big State Thing...”.

The Istanbul Chief Prosecutor’s Office vindicated daily Cumhuriyet columnist Bekir Coşkun of charges leveled against him by Turkey’s General Staff for an article he penned, while CHP deputy Sezgin Tanrıkulu also proposed an amendment to nullify a law that prescribes prison terms for insulting the president.

The General Staff was silent for a long time. They preferred to break their silence on World Press Freedom Day and stated that media was trying to exhaust TSK by news, comments and claims.

Journalist Bekir Coşkun and the Cumhuriyet newspaper were convicted of an "attack on the personal rights" of Prime Minister Erdoğan. They were sentenced to a monetary fine of TL 5,000 in compensation.

After Prime Minister Erdogan said on television that those who could not accept Abdullah Gül as president should give up Turkish citizenship and leave the country, the CHP, the EU and newspaper columnists have reacted.
