A demonstration of solidarity has been staged in front of Afrika newspaper, which was assaulted due to its headline ““Peace Operation to Cyprus, Olive Branch to Syria…Another Occupation Operation by Turkey” about the Afrin operation. Targeting the newspaper, President and Justice and Development Party (AKP) Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had said, “My brothers and sisters in the Northern Cyprus have to respond to that”.
The people who wanted to condemn the attack gathered in front of the building as of 7 p.m. yesterday (January 22).
According to a report by Yeni Düzen newspaper, the slogans “Peace cannot be prevented in Cyprus”, “Long live freedom of the press”, “Afrika won’t be a Madımak*” were chanted.
Slogans against President Erdoğan were chanted as well in the demonstration.
As the group entered the area to protest Afrika newspaper, riot squad police came between the two groups.
Detainees were released
Two people who were detained last night were released.
In its message on the social media, AKP Cyprus Youth Branch thanked Turkey’s Ambassador to Nicosia for the release of the detainees.
The message also included a photo taken with those who were released. (EKN/TK)
