World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in its statement as to Paris agreement said commitments made by over 180 countries to decrease greenhouse gas emission to keep the heat 1.5 degrees is not sufficient, and that even the present commitments are fulfilled, a warmer planet ranging between 2.7°C-3.7°C is waiting for us.
WWF stated that in order to achieve the target of 1.5°C, downward trend should begin and countries should improve their promises by 2020.
Turkey at crossroads
WWF reminded that Turkey has asked to benefit from climate funds after the year of 2020 but this request hasn’t been met due to the letter of agreement.
Director of WWF-Turkey Protecting Nature Conservation, Mustafa Özgür Berke stating Turkey is at a crossroads said Turkey needs to review its development and energy policies in light of Paris agreement.
“After the Paris agreement, it will be getting harder to obtain finance for especially coal projects. Turkey needs to elevate its targets with respect to renewable energy in order to both do its part in struggle against climate change and to decrease its dependence on foreign energy sources”.
According to analyses conducted by WWF-Turkey with experts, cost of Turkey pursuing policies promoting renewable energies such as wind and sun is the same with pursuing coal-based policies in 15 years. (NV/TK)
