Writer Nurcan Baysal Detained Due to ‘Afrin Posts’

T24 news site writer Nurcan Baysal is among the 30 people who have been detained as part of the operation launched by Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office into posts on the social media about Afrin operation.

Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Adana MP Meral Danış Beştaş wrote on Twitter: “Nurcan Baysal was detained from her home by police breaking into without knocking at around 12:10 a.m. last night. The reason is; she is suing for peace. A writer being detained for opposing war and social media posts demonstrates the rightfulness of being against war”.

Speaking to T24, her lawyer Reyhan Baydemir said, “My client is kept in the Anti-Terror bureau. I met her this morning. She was detained due to her social media posts about Afrin”.

Detentions in İstanbul and Diyarbakır

Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office announced that 30 people were detained due to their social media messages on charge of “propagandizing for terrorism”.

The Ministry of Interior stated that 24 people were detained Turkey-wide and 17 of them are in Diyarbakır.

Investigation was launched against 75 people in total in İstanbul.

Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation into HDP Spokesperson Ayhan Bilgen and HDP Co-Chair Nadir Yıldırım due to their statements about the military campaign into Afrin.

Writer Tunç’s home was raided

Have been living abroad for two years, Writers’ Trade Union of Turkey (TYS) member Aziz Tunç’s home in İstanbul was raided due to his posts about Afrin. Evrensel daily newspaper reported that there is a detention warrant for Tunç.

Police searched the house for 40 minutes. Some notes and a book called “Ölümsüzler” (Immortals) published by the Labor Party in memory of the people who lost their lives in October 10 Ankara Massacre were seized by the police. (AS/TK)
