The Thomson Reuters Foundation asked experts in women's issues which of the world's 19 megacities are safe for women and which need to do more to ensure women are not at risk of sexual violence and harassment and harmful cultural practices and have access to healthcare, finance and education.
In each of the 19 megacities, the foundation contacted 20 experts focused on women's issues including academics, non-government organisation workers, healthcare staff, policy-makers, and social commentators.
Among the 19 megacities, İstanbul was the 10th most dangerous city for women. Cairo was the most dangerous city.
The list of the most dangerous cities for women are as follows:

İstanbul: 6th most dangerous city in sexual violence
İstanbul ranked as the 10th worst megacity for women and the 6th worst when it came to women at risk of sexual violence and harassment.
İstanbul's ranking in four categories are as follows:
Sexual violence: 6 (asked whether women could live in this city without facing the risk of sexual violence including rape or sexual attacks or harassment)
Access to healthcare: 13 (asked whether women have good access to healthcare including control over reproductive health and maternal mortality)
Cultural Practices: 8 (asked whether women are well protected from potentially harmful cultural practices including female genital mutilation, child, early or forced marriage, female infanticide)
Economic Opportunities: 8 (Asked whether women have access to economic resources such as education, ownership of land or other forms of property, and financial services such as bank accounts)
