Female mukhtar candidates have won more than males in the Kadıköy district of İstanbul in the March 31 local elections.
A mukhtar is the head of a neighborhood, the smallest administrative unit in Turkey.
According to the election results, female candidates won in 12 neighborhoods while men won in nine in the Asian side district. Before the elections, 10 neighborhoods had female mukhtars.
In 18 neighborhoods, the incumbent mukhtars were re-elected, the Gazete Kadıköy reported. In the two of the three neighborhoods where the mukhtar changed, female candidates took over the neighborhoods from men.
In the Caferağa neighborhood, the third-time mukhtar Zeynep Ayman draws attention with her neighborhood council that consists of an opera artist, a writer, a cartoonist, an engineer, a lawyer, and an architect. (EMK/VK)
