Women in Mardin E-type Prison have created a newspaper "Özgür Gündem Zindan" (Dungeon). The original Özgür Gündem daily had been closed down in a police raid on the newspaper's building on August 16 and the "temporary closure" decision of the court was reported by the pro-government Yeni Şafak daily before the notice was even served to Özgür Gündem.
Zehra Doğan, one of the editors of JINHA daily, and other women in Mardin E-type Prison, prepared the 8-page handmade newspaper on September 12. The images accompanying the articles also consisted of illustrations drawn by the women themselves.
The headline of the hand-made newspaper was "Political prisoners resist in prisons for Öcalan," and the subheading reads "Being a resident of Nusaybin is treason according to the state!".
The 8-page newspaper includes sections on women, politics, culture and arts, ecology and current developments, as well as a page in Kurdish.
Özgür Gündem Zindan also published some interviews with women prisoners, cover topics such as oppression against women, detentions and rights violations in the prison, as well as saz and drawing lessons on the culture and arts page and the benefits of parsley and garlic on the ecology page. (ÇT/DG)
