Prof. Fazıl Önder Sönmez, the vice rector of Boğaziçi University's appointed rector Prof. Melih Bulu, has been appointed as the acting dean of the Engineering Faculty by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK).
In an official letter sent to the Rector's Office and signed by YÖK Chair Yekta Saraç, it is said, "Your offer that the duty as the dean of Engineering Faculty of your University be fulfilled by Vice Rector Prof. Fazıl Önder Sönmez until a new dean is appointed has been approved."
What happened?
Appointed as the Vice Rector of Boğaziçi University on March 5, as the Dean of Student Affairs and the Coordinator of the Financial Aid Office on March 22 and as the acting director of the Institute of Graduate Studies in Science and Engineering (FBE) on March 25, Prof. Fazıl Önder Sönmez's four positions were reduced to two by Prof. Naci İnci on May 29.

Who is Fazıl Önder Sönmez?Prof. Fazıl Önder Sönmez, a faculty member from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, did his BA and MA at Boğaziçi University and got his PhD at UCLA in Los Angeles, the United States. Sönmez is one of the first disciplinary board members of the BURA - the People of Boğaziçi Association. The 1st General Assembly of the BURA on October 10, 2004 was attended by AKP politicians Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Kadir Topbaş and Burhan Kuzu. The 15th Ordinary General Assembly on December 1, 2019 was also attended by Parliamentary Speaker Mustafa Şentop. He is also an advisor to the Boğaziçi Islam Research Club (BİSAK). |
One more appointment
Appointing himself as the acting director of the FBE, Vice Rector of Boğaziçi University Prof. Naci İnci appointed another official from the university as the Coordinator of the Financial Aid Office.
University of Health Sciences (SBÜ) Head of Personnel Department Hakan Nedim Malkoç was also appointed as the Secretary General of Boğaziçi University yesterday (June 1).
As reported by Boğaziçi TV, Malkoç was the deputy branch chair of the Ottoman Educational Hearts in Kocaeli province. It is also understood that Hakan Nedim Malkoç is a relative of Şeref Malkoç, the former chief advisor to the President and ombudsperson. (DŞ/SD)
