The US-based Washington Post newspaper ran a full-page advertisement from the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) to express support for its Representative to Turkey Erol Önderoğlu in its July 10 issue.
Printed in support for Önderoğlu, who is also the Freedom of Expression Rapporteur to bianet, the advertisement stated the following:
"Our colleague in Turkey, Erol Önderoğlu, could face years in prison for supporting a Kurdish newspaper. Journalism is not a crime. Protect our shared values. Defend press freedom."
Önderoğlu is facing 14 years in prison for having solidarized with the closed Özgür Gündem newspaper by working as its Editor-in-Chief on Watch.

The RSF has also posted a tweet regarding the issue and announced that the verdict against Önderoğlu is expected to be announced on July 17.
Önderoğlu, Nesin and Fincancı imprisoned for 10 days
RSF Representative to Turkey Erol Önderoğlu, Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TİHV-HRFT) Chair Şebnem Korur Fincancı and writer Ahmet Nesin, who were the Editors-in-Chief on Watch of daily Özgür Güdndem, were arrested on June 20, 2016. While Önderoğlu and Fincancı were released 10 days later on June 30, Nesin was released on July 1, 2016.

Trials of Özgür Gündem Editors-in-Chief on WatchThe Editors-in-Chief on Watch campaign of Özgür Gündem daily had begun on May 3, 2016 and ended on August 7, 2016. Daily was closed through the Statutory Decree No. 675 issued under the State of Emergency. Investigations have been launched against 50 of the 56 Editors-in-Chief on Watch who have participated in the campaign. In 11 of these cases, the court has ordered not to prosecute and in 38 cases, a lawsuit has been brought. One case has been dismissed due to expiration of the Statute of Limitation in the investigation Relying on the Articles 7(2) and 6(2) of the Anti-Terror Law No. 3713, the 38 Editors-in-Chief on Watch have stood trial on the charge of "propagandizing for a terrorist organization" and for "publishing and spreading statements of terrorist organizations. All prison sentences except those of Canpolat and Çelikkan, have been deferred. Çelikkan entered Kırklareli Prison on August 14, 2017 and was transferred to open prison on October 14, 2017. He was released on October 21, 2017. Kızılkaya's casesÖzgür Gündem Managing Editor İnan Kızılkaya is defendant in all 38 cases. His case was separated from the others in the trials together with the other Editors-in-Chief on Watch. İstanbul 23rd Heavy Criminal Court is combining Kızılkaya's case with the main trial. Özgür Gündem main trialIn the main trial, Özgür Gündem Consultant Board members Necmiye Alpay, Aslı Erdoğan, Ragıp Zarakolu, Filiz Koçali, Eren Keskin, Editors-in-Chief Zana Kaya, İnan Kızılkaya, Kemal Sancılı and Bilge Oykut are standing trial. Sancılı has still been arrested as part of the lawsuit. |
