In the long-standing case of the disappearance of Hürmüz Diril (71) in Mehrî village, Şırnak Beytüşşebap, on January 8, 2020, and the subsequent discovery of their spouse, Şimuni Diril's (65) body after 70 days, the trial has finally reached a verdict.
Apro Diril, the chief suspect and a relative of the Chaldean couple, has been found guilty of "murder with monstrous feeling or torment" and "premeditated murder" and was sentenced to life imprisonment, Mezopotamya Agency (MA) reported. The other two defendants, Behçet Öztunç and İsmail Yıldız, have been acquitted of all charges.
In response to the verdict, Rojhat Dilsiz, the lawyer representing the Diril family and also the President of Şırnak Bar Association, expressed their intent to appeal the ruling to a higher court.
Dilsiz emphasized the need to pursue their legal battle further, stating, "As a reality of our country, we will continue our legal fight in the judicial process where the true culprits, who were involved alongside Apro Diril, have not yet been revealed or brought to justice."
The case had garnered widespread attention due to the prolonged disappearance of the couple and the subsequent discovery of Şimuni Diril's remains. (RT/VK)
