Istanbul 13th High Criminal Court issued a verdict in Ergenekon case this afternoon, announcing sentences for 275 defendants including former army chief İlker Başbuğ, CHP deputy Mustafa Balbay, Labor Party chairman Doğu Perinçek and journalist Tuncay Özkan.
21 defendants acquitted
CHP Zonguldak province deputy Mehmet Haberal has been released considering the length of prison term. 16 other defendants including Mehmet Otuzbiroğlu, Hıfzı Çubukçu and Mehmet Perinçek have also been released for similar reasons.
The court issue arrest warrants for 11 defendants including Yurt newspaper editor-in-chief Merdan Yanardağ, former Gendarmerie Forces Chief Şener Eruygur and former Istanbul University president Kemal Alemdaroğlu. Other names on the arrest warrant list were as follows: Yalçın Küçük, Tuncer Kılınç, Ahmet Cinali, Adnan Türkkan, Hüseyin Buzoğlu, Tunç Akkoç, Adnan Akfırat, Mehmet Ali Çelebi, Kemal Şahin, Levent Temiz.
There is no current information on Merdan Yanardağ as the court didn't read the name,Yurt newspaper wrote.
Acquitted defendants were as follows: Ali Yiğit, journalist Caner Taşpınar, Süleyman Esen, director Halis Yavuz Işıklar and Salih Kunter.
The court also dismissed cases for those who died during the long trial.
The case for other fugitive defendants including Bedrettin Dalan and Turhan Çömez has been separated from the main case.
