Şıvan Bayar, a history teacher major in Mersin University, died in action against ISIS in the Kurdish-Syrian town Kobane.
A member of Democratic Patriot Youth (DYG) and served as YPG commandant in the battlefield, Şıvan Bayar was reportedly killed on November 20. Bayar had the nom de guerre Adıl Rojhat.
A commemoration event was organized today in Mersin University where his friends from the faculty initiated a moment of silence and received condolences.
Commemoration in Şırnak
A commemoration event was also organized in the southeastern province of Şırnak - Bayar’s hometown.
According to Dicle News Agency, officials from Democratic Regions Party also joined the commemoration tent set up in Cudi neighbrhood.
“My father was killed in the 1990s with no claim,” Şıvan Bayar’s brother Lokman Bayar said.
He expressed that the killer behind his father and brother had the same mentality: “We struggled for our culture and identity for years and we lost so many people. We buried thousands of youngsters like my brother. But Adıl’s name will be replaced by thousand other,” he said.
From university to Kobane
Among those who died in action in Kobane included several university students or recent graduates.
Suphi Nejat Ağırnaslı from Bosporus University, Aziz Ürselendi from Marmara University, Hakan Çelik from Istanbul University, and Kader Ortakaya from Marmara University’s graduate program. (BK/BM)
